Personally, I always adapt my own recipes, but using recipe tools such as books and websites is always really great for inspiration and ideas and after just flicking through this cook book for a couple of pages, I already had tons of ideas for new recipes that I wanted to try out. Now most meat-eaters would have never even thought about buying a vegetarian cook book, but I wholly recommend this book, or even another vegetarian cook book, to EVERYONE and here's why...
- Number one, switching to a vegetarian meal is often healthier (but not always if you go for the wrong foods - eating an entire block of cheese is vegetarian but will certainly be a lot less healthy than eating a chicken sandwich). If you want a healthy meal, cutting out the meat and going for something like an aubergine stew, or a vegetable frittata can often be a lot healthier and boost the vitamins and minerals you need, especially because removing the meat from a dish means that you eat a lot more vegetables as opposed to have a few green beans as a measly side.
- Experimenting with vegetarian dishes can have give you VERY tasty results. When having vegetables as a side to a meat-based meal, people tend to settle for average, boiled vegetables to the side of the meat and end up with the perception that vegetables, and a vegetable-based diet would be extremely dull. When you remove meat from the equation and begin to experiment with all of the wonderful vegetarian foods such as beans, tofu and wheats, you can create some incredible, flavourful dishes that absolutely would not leave you wondering where the meat was. But to really appreciate the flavourful vegetarian dishes, you need to take meat out of your meal - just give it a try!
- Going vegetarian for one or two meals a week is a great idea for meat-lovers that also love to experiment with new flavours and dishes. Creating an incredible vegetarian meal for one or two meals a week will allow you to experiment with flavours that you otherwise wouldn't have when meat is the main component of your dish. Also, doing it this way, won't leave you craving meat for the avid meat-lovers out there.
- If you really, really can't bare to leave meat out of your meal, then these vegetarian dishes work as wonderful side dishes or entrées to serve up in a large serving dish and allow your party to help themselves. But using a vegetarian recipe book, where these dishes for the whole meal for vegetarian eaters, will mean that your side-dishes are bursting with flavour.
This particular book I really love because it's simple and the ingredients aren't too difficult to get hold of and the recipes tend to be quite quick. The recipes also feature a lot of my favourite vegetarian foods such as beans, wheats and tofu. This book, Vegetarian Made Simple, was actually only £3 from my local Tesco store (that's just 3p a recipe), which is absolutely amazing! It can also be purchased from Amazon for £4 which even still is a great deal for 100 recipes! If you don't want to purchase a book quite yet, the Yummly site, which I've written about here, is also a great place to start!
